MYSTERIUM
Mysterium is a multi-sensorial concert that redefines the traditional boundaries of listening to live music. A refined selection of classical piano works are presented in combination with an olfactory landscape (or scent-scape) carefully constructed with fine essences and colored lighting design. This conceptual form of live musical performance, involves the audience in a new aesthetic and emotional experience. The perfumed essences, created by maitre perfumer Sileno Cheloni, and colored lights designed by Samantha Stout harmonize with the piano music, leading the listener on a journey. The multi-dimensional sensory stimuli provide a musical listening experience at the most profound level of human cognition and emotion.
The project was conceptualized following the synesthetic expressions of Russian composer, Alexander Scriabin, with colors associated to sounds and tonality; and inspired also from the study of the “Clavier a Lumiere” and the departure of Prometheus, Poem of Fire, op. 60 (1910). From the sounds and their associated colors, the pianist and composer Antonio Artese has added an olfactory dimension to the performance by way of selecting custom perfumed essences crafted by Cheloni.
Scientific studies have, in fact, demonstrated that the perception of stimuli by the olfactory system produces a strong evocation of images and memories, and amplifies the emotional experience induced by the music, due to the direct connection to the brain’s limbic system - the center of human emotion and memory.
The program consists of works by Alexander Scriabin, together with masterpieces from Grieg, and original compositions. Maestro Artese adds two original suites for piano, “Lakes of My Mind” (2014) and “The Island”, a series of musical portraits emerging from sensorial / olfactory and soundscape memories inspired by walks on the Mallorca Island.
Mysterium debuted with great success on the occasion of the International Conference of Music in Museums held in Florence on February 21st 2014. The first concert was held in the intriguing Hall of Statues at the Stefano Bardini Museum in Florence. Mysterium was subsequently presented in Palma de Mallorca, Spain; and Rome, Campobasso (Italy), Ferrara, and at “La Specola” Museum and Villa di Maiano in Florence.
Particularly suited to smaller venues, where the proximity of the audience to the musician permits a unique intimacy and direct involvement in the sensorial experience, Mysterium is highly recommended to curious and imaginative audiences interested in a vibrant and new aesthetic experience.

About Tres Cordes
Tres Cordes are combined Spanish-French words, literally meaning ‘three strings’. It is used here to represent the violin, viola and cello. Each trio player brings with them the unique colour of their stringed instrument – the violin, viola and cello, to blend as a unified whole. Together they aim to bring music to life with warmth, life and beauty.
In piano music, Tre Corde means to release the soft pedal, allowing the hammers to play on all of the strings belonging to each note, creating a rich, full, resonant tone - the sound Tres Cordes wish to achieve.
Tres Cordes string trio has been performing together since 2007, and are all members of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The trio has a passion for chamber music which they share with audiences around New Zealand, including live TV broadcasts. In 2013 they toured for Chamber Music NZ, and their playing was described as “high spirited” and “fun overflowing,” “with splendid co-ordination and attack.” by the Rotorua Daily Post. They were invited to the Nelson Composers Workshop in 2011, to perform and work alongside young NZ composers. The trio commissioned and premiered Anthony Ritchie's Easter Melancholy alongside artist Nathanael Provis' landscape paintings for his opening exhibition. Members have performed at the NZ Embassy, Tokyo and their CD “String Trio Sapphires” is regularly broadcast on Concert FM. In 2015, they recorded the music for The Art of Recovery for the New Zealand International Film Festival and performed for the 2016 opening of the Chinese Spring Festival.
